Larry James
My stained glass journey began over 40 years ago in Carleton Place, Ontario, just outside of Ottawa. What started as a hobby quickly became a lifelong practice—one that’s taken me across the country and into countless homes, businesses, and community spaces.
From those early days experimenting with glass cutters and lead came, I discovered a love for the way light transforms colour and shape. Over the decades, that passion has carried me west to the Kootenays, where I now create and share my work at local markets, with frequent trips through the Okanagan and Southern Alberta.
I’ve always been drawn to the vintage charm of art deco and mid-century design, and much of my work reflects those influences. From custom lamps and hanging panels to photo frames and seasonal pieces, I enjoy making stained glass that adds warmth, character, and a touch of history. I also specialize in restoring old window frames, giving them a second life with glasswork that honours their past while making them feel fresh and new.
Some of my most memorable moments have been through commissioned projects—incorporating a family heirloom, a favourite colour, or a special memory into glass. These projects remind me that stained glass is more than decoration; it’s a way of holding onto stories.
Today, you’ll often find me at markets across the Kootenays, chatting with people who share a love for handcrafted work. These conversations, along with the joy of creating, continue to inspire me.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know my work.
